Lice Protocol

If lice are found on a child’s head at home:

Parents must alert the teacher and the office that their child has lice.

The Office will contact the student's teacher. The teacher will send an email notification or hard copy notification to parents about a possible head lice exposure in their classroom.

  • If head lice are found, families are instructed to check all immediate family members and notify any other contacts they have had in the last week.
  • The Office shares this information with the school nurse by email or a copy of the ‘Notice’.

The child may return to school as soon as (1) treatment is completed (i.e. the following day), and (2) the parents have signed and returned the completed treatment release form to the school office.

If lice are found on a student at school:

Teachers/School Staff:

  • The student is sent home for treatment at the end of the school day.
  • Parents are given the “Head Lice Packet” with the information on the treatment of the student (and other family members, if infested). The packet includes information on treatment of the infested person, handling of the person’s personal items, the household, a treatment release form, and local resources available.

The child may return to school as soon as (1) treatment is completed (i.e. the following day), and (2) the parents have signed and returned the completed treatment release form to the school office.
