The week will focus on the 8 Dimensions of Wellness, and each day two dimensions will be highlighted with Friday culminating and integrating each dimension into our daily lives. Project Homekey Update
In September, 2021 the Project Homekey Initiative planned for 1251 South Eliseo Blvd. was brought to the attention of the KSD. We immediately connected with the County of Marin representatives and invited their staff to speak at our October 12 KSD Board Meeting. Since that meeting three forums have been held and one was specifically geared towards our KSD community, November 18, 2021 Forum. As this initiative evolves, our school district continues to be engaged in discussions with County leaders about the project as well as the feedback we are receiving from our local stakeholders.
As a school district our primary role is the safety and well-being of our students, thus it is paramount that we, the District, engage and make information accessible to the community as information is received. We are in regular communication with the Project Team and the County as well as offering community members ways to share their perspectives and opinions directly to County leaders. The KSD is participating on the project's advisory board and initiating additional informational forums in an effort to further engage all stakeholders.
This project is front and center for our school district and we will continue to do our very best to keep the community informed as this process evolves. Marin Public Health & MCOE Updates
On December 1, 2021 an updated COVID-19 Interim Guidance for K-12 School and Youth Performing Arts, Sports and Extracurricular Activities in Marin County was released, which reinforces the requirement of indoor masking in all school settings. The KSD will continue to enforce indoor masking at all our school facilities during the school day and for external groups using the school facilities after school hours. As we move into the winter season and the new Omicron variant evolves there is still much to learn, thus maintaining a common message and being in alignment with this masking protocol will be essential for minimizing confusion for our students and school community.
Our purpose of maintaining this protocol is to support the safety and well-being of our students and school community. This recent article about an exposure at one of our local elementary schools highlights the impact of not following public health guidelines as well as the impact exposure has on students and families. Especially important to remember around the holidays.
Thank you in advance for your support and enforcement of this safety measure on behalf of our KSD community. As guidance further shifts we too will adjust in the best interest of students and families.

Tips for Protecting Yourself and Others This Holiday Season
Current Travel Guidance:
- Unvaccinated TK-12 students who travel out of state or the U.S. may return to school under modified quarantine
- TK-12 students should test on Day 5 after returning home and can stay in school as long as they remain symptom free and the Day 5 test is negative
- Students should refrain from socializing outside of school and participating in club sports or extracurricular activities outside of school or home until they receive a negative test result
- Families returning from international travel will need to test negative before returning to the U.S.
Bacich Bears News
Dear Bacich Community,
We kicked off our Inclusive Schools celebration last Friday at our school wide assembly. The focus was on Caring and Inclusivity. Students learned hand signals to go with the definitions of each of these words to use during transitions in the classroom. For example, when the teacher calls out ‘caring’, students respond by saying "giving love and comfort" as they stretch their arms out in front of them (giving), then back toward their chest creating a heart with their hands (love) and then wrapping their arms around themselves in a self hug (comfort). This GLAD strategy supports vocabulary development as well as integrates the concept of caring into everyday activities.
During the assembly, we had students from Kate Mansour’s class lead the pledge and ring the Bacich bells. We also had students of different ages provide testimonials of how they exhibit caring and inclusivity at Bacich every day. For the next two weeks, students will be rewarded with Bacich Bear Cards when they show extra care or include others.
To support building a more inclusive school, we are also participating in school wide read-alouds with discussion and activities. Second through fourth grade are reading The Junkyard Wonders (by Patricia Polacco) and kinder and first are reading We’re All Wonders (by RJ Palacio). I encourage you to engage in a dialogue with your child about these books and their important messages.

Winter Voices Concert
Dear Families,
I am very excited to let you know that the 4th grade students have prepared two songs to perform on Friday, December 10, 2021 at 8:30 a.m. for our Mini Concert that will be live streamed through our Bacich displays and for quality purposes, it will be recorded for the families. The recording will be sent through Parent Square for your viewing the day after the concert. Please bring your child to school on time and make sure they are dressed in attire that is suitable for a school concert.
The lyrics and the accompaniments are on my website for the students to practice at home. Please remind your child to give their best effort and to be respectful during the performance. Thank you for your support.

Kent Tutors Marin: Free virtual tutoring to K–6th graders in all subjects during school, after school, and on weekends. Spanish-speaking tutors are available. Sessions are 30-45 minutes via Zoom.
Healthy Snacks for Recess
Please remember to send your child to school each day with a healthy snack to eat at their first recess. Students are expected to have a snack before they head out to recess. A healthy snack provides them the boost they need to be successful in class through the late morning. Thank you!

Please do your best to arrive close to your child’s scheduled dismissal time so that the younger students can get safely picked up in the parking lot before there is a long line of cars for the next grade level.
Release times are Kindergarten - 12:00; First and Second - 12:15; Third and Fourth - 12:30.
Also, we do not have supervision in the kindergarten playground after school, so please do not have your younger children wait there for later pick up. Thank you!

Greetings Kent Community,
This Friday December 10th at 4 p.m. we will publish first trimester grades in Aeries for students and families to review. You can access your child’s grade through the Aeries Family Portal, where trimester 1 grades will be prominently displayed.
Grades are an important communication tool regarding students’ progress in their classes, yet I advise that families take care when interpreting and communicating with your children regarding their grades. While it can be tempting to focus on the letter grade alone, and to compliment high grades and question lower grades, I encourage you to ask your child about their learning, effort, and engagement in each class. Ask for specific examples of what they’ve learned or a particularly effective habit they’ve developed that led to success in a class. Discuss what obstacles to learning and/or assignment completion exist, and work together to make a plan to overcome them. Most importantly, celebrate and affirm where hard work, perseverance and effort has led your child to learn and achieve, regardless of the letter grade received. If you have questions after reviewing your child’s first trimester report card, please contact your child’s teacher.
This Wednesday during Advisory class, we will engage in a discussion about school safety, and the ways in which we prepare to lockdown our campus during an unsafe situation. Per California Education Code, it is required that schools hold lockdown drills each year, and that schools are adequately prepared to protect students from an unwelcome and unsafe threat on campus. While these are difficult conversations to have, it is essential that we prepare in case the unthinkable transpires on our own campus.
At Kent we prepare for two specific lockdown scenarios, named lockdown 1 and lockdown 2:
- In a lockdown 1 scenario, there is an unsafe situation in our community that does not include an explicit threat to our campus. During a lockdown 1 event, students and staff remain in a locked classroom or space with windows covered, yet typical classroom activity may continue.
- In a lockdown 2 scenario, there is an unwelcome and unsafe situation on campus that suggests a direct threat to student and staff safety. During a lockdown 2 event, classroom spaces are locked, windows are covered, all entry points are barricaded, and students gather together in a safe and protected space in the classroom.
During Advisory this week, Ms. Holmes and I will be sharing a video where we carefully explain the two types of lockdown scenarios, as well as the manner in which students and staff are expected to respond. The video will be followed by classroom discussions about how we are to respond if faced with a lockdown 1 and 2 scenario, as well as time for students to ask questions of their advisors.
We will hold a lockdown 1 drill next Tuesday during study session, and a lockdown 2 drill in February. While we all hope this preparation will never have to be applied at our school during a real life situation, it is our responsibility to be prepared and practice for safety. Please reach out to Ms. Holmes and me if you have any questions about our lockdown preparations and procedures at our school.

Toys for Tots Drive
If you have any new or gently new toys please feel free to donate them in the boxes outside Ms. Stephen's room. All donations will go to Toys for Tots, for families who can’t afford to buy presents.
It is also a house competition. The boxes are separated by house and the house that donates the most gets house points! It starts tomorrow, December 7 through December 17.

Pulling it off is quite another matter… Join us for a lecture that will cover some neuroscience, research about stress, and focus on how parents can be effective and skillful in handling typical parenting challenges.
Dr. Laura Kastner, Ph.D. is currently a clinical professor in both the departments of psychology and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington. She is an author of five books written for parents on child development and parenting, including Getting to Calm: Cool-headed strategies for parenting tweens and teens and Wise-Minded Parenting: 7 Essentials for raising successful tweens and teens. Marin Schools Commitment to Efficiency & Effectiveness
Our school district is committed to partnering with other districts throughout the county to create greater efficiencies. This high level of collaboration is coordinated by the Marin County Office of Education. The county-wide Efficiency and Effectiveness Committee has created this very brief video, as well as this website for the public to learn more about our work together. San Francisco Boys Chorus – Marin Group
Auditions for the Marin Group of the San Francisco Boys Chorus will be held Saturday, January 8 in San Rafael. Boys ages 5 to 12 with unchanged voices are encouraged to apply. K or Pre-K boys are automatically accepted into the Junior Chorus and do not need to audition.
Boys receive vocal training and gain music appreciation, self-confidence, and self-discipline. Boys trained by the San Francisco Boys Chorus have performed in San Francisco Opera productions since 1948, in addition to touring domestically and internationally. Currently there is information/petition circulating in the community opposing the site selection and suggesting that our Board will be deciding on the project this month. I write today to clarify some of the misinformation included in the petition, and also to let folks know that no action or decision on this project will be made till late January if indeed the project receives state approval.
Specifically: we anticipate hearing from the State in late December/early January whether the Eliseo Site is awarded a Homekey grant. If awarded, a hearing of the Board of Supervisors (BOS) will be scheduled in late January in order to formally approve acceptance of the grant. If approved,Episcopal Community Services (ECS) will have 12 months/one year from date of award to complete improvements to the site and begin moving residents into the new housing.
I will be holding a third community zoom in early to mid-January (date to be announced soon) before the January BOS meeting date in order to update residents, hear comments and concerns and answer questions.

Community Forums: Project Homekey
On Thursday, November 18, the County of Marin, Episcopal Community Services, and Opening Doors Marin co-hosted a webinar forum geared towards providing parents/guardians and staff of the Kentfield School District detailed information about the Project Homekey initiative planned for 1251 S. Eliseo Blvd.

Marin Health Hubs
Health hubs, we provide free and bilingual services such as food distribution, nutrition education, health screenings, and information about community organizations.
Food pantry items are provided by the SF-Marin Food Bank and by the ExtraFood.org Program, and the health screenings are provided by our wonderful nurses!
Everyone is welcome to attend the health hubs food pantry and to help us run it!
