KSD Highlights

Dear KSD Community,

Thank you to everyone who joined the KSD to honor our KSD Retirees, Golden Bell recipients, volunteers, and our transiting staff during our special recognition ceremony before the board meeting yesterday afternoon. It was a celebration of our school community where appreciation and positive accolades were provided to those who have given so much to the KSD community.

Following the event we held a Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees, where reports were provided related to KSD Special Education Services, the proposed Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), and the Proposed KSD Budget for the 2023-2024 school year. The Board held public hearings for these proposed plans and intends to consider approval at our June 13th meeting of the Board of Trustees.

Take good care,

COVID Update

The latest COVID-19 subvariant, XXB.1.16, is increasing in the U.S. according to estimates from the CDC. It has been most documented in India but has been found in 29 countries, according to the WHO. This new subvariant is producing a new symptom: conjunctivitis (pink eye), especially in children.

MCPH is recommending COVID-19 testing for students who present with pink eye. Guidance will be updated to reflect this change.

California Department of Public Health encourages all students and staff to test for COVID-19 IF they feel sick, AFTER exposure, travel, or large gatherings, and BEFORE events or visiting high-risk people.

Please know that our school offices have COVID tests available if needed. Thank you for your support.

Please reference this exposure notice for symptoms, communicability, and prevention information. (English I Spanish).

Please keep your child home if they are sick. Please contact our school nurse Laurel Yrun (lyrun@kentfieldschools.org), with any questions about navigating illness and school this year.

Bacich Bears News

Maria Martin

Dear Bacich Families,

I hope you enjoyed the Memorial Day holiday weekend in honor of our U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day is the final national holiday during the 2022-2023 school year. The next three weeks are filled with special classroom and school activities, events, and celebrations.

As you may know, the Character Counts program is one component of our social-emotional learning curriculum used at Bacich. Character Counts focuses on developing six pillars of character. The Six Pillars of Character are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. These character pillars help instill a positive school culture with kindness at the forefront.

Each week we celebrate students who earn Bacich Bear Cards for demonstrating one of the six pillars of character in an extraordinary way. Students can receive Bacich Bear Cards from their classroom teachers as well as other Bacich staff members. Our third and fourth-grade student Peacemakers also distribute Bacich Bear Cards to younger students during recess. During our Wednesday morning assemblies, we recognize and celebrate all of the Bacich Bear Card recipients for the week.

This past week I was made aware of a heartwarming display of the citizenship and caring character pillars. Citizenship includes taking action to make your home, school, or community a better place. Caring is all about being kind and compassionate. Two third-grade students who learned to sew in Mrs. Libby’s art class volunteered to repair a beanbag chair that belonged to a kindergarten classroom. The beanbag chair had a hole and the stuffing was coming out. Third-grade students Briza and Sasha came to the rescue and used their newly learned sewing skills to repair the beanbag chair. Now all of the students in the kindergarten class can once again enjoy using this chair to read and relax. Thank you Briza and Sasha for making our school a better place!

I hope you enjoy the short week ahead.

Kent Falcons News

Kent Principal Grant Althouse

Dear Kent Middle School Families,

June is on the horizon, and the conclusion of the 2022-2023 school year is only three short weeks away! Many celebrations, acknowledgments, and reflections are ahead as we finish this year of learning together.

Kent Principal’s Coffee – Please plan to join us for the final Principal’s Coffee of the year this Friday, June 2 from 8:45 to 10 a.m. in the Kent Library. During this Friday’s presentation, we will discuss transitions between grade levels, what to expect in your child’s grade level next year, and how students can set themselves up for success come the fall. Presenters this Friday will include 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Level Coordinators Lisa Bridges, Julie Gallagher, and Myra Anderson, as well as counselor Diana Bokaie, assistant principal Wendy Holmes, and me. We look forward to providing insights into the next grade level for your child! Please plan to join us for a warm cup of coffee and a productive conversation as we prepare for the next school year.

Upcoming Music Concerts – Our Kent Middle School musicians prepare to conclude their school year by performing a series of spring concerts for their peers and their families. The concerts begin this Wednesday, May 31 with the annual school Pops concert. During this school day performance, a variety of band, string, and choral ensembles will perform for their classmates, as well as crowd favorites like the 2023 Karaoke competition winners and the Kent rock band. The evening concert series kicks off next week on Monday, June 5 with the Spring Chorus concert, featuring a variety of choral numbers and creative ensembles. Next Tuesday, the 5th-grade band and string ensembles perform, while on Wednesday evening the 6th-grade band and string groups take the stage. The zero-period band and string ensembles conclude the series next week with a performance on Thursday evening. Please plan to join us for one or all of our spring concerts to see just how much progress our students have made with their musicianship and performance!

Kent Summer Reading Lists

Summer Reading List – Summer break can present a welcomed refuge from the academic rigors of the school year, yet it is important to maintain some healthy literacy and numeracy habits even when outside of school. To assist with book selection for our falcons over the summer, school librarian Rebecca Jelen has compiled extensive summer reading lists for each grade level. The purpose of summer reading is to promote student choice, extend learning beyond the classroom, introduce students to genres of literature that they will encounter throughout the coming school year, and offer new perspectives on the people, places, and ideas that shape students’ worlds and experiences. As a part of their summer reading, each returning student is required to read three books from their grade level list OR three books of their choice. Maintaining daily reading habits over the summer helps to ensure that students continue to build reading strategies and skills that will lead to success with the next grade level’s curriculum.

School Site Council, New Membership for 2023-2024 – Thank you to all community members who voted to fill our open Kent School Site Council parent representative positions, and thank you to the parents who have expressed an interest to volunteer their time in this capacity. We are pleased to share that parents Beth Karlsson, Julie Kidd, and Larry Moscato will be serving on our Kent School Site Council starting in the 2023/24 school year. We look forward to working with you Beth, Julie, and Larry!

Let’s have an awesome week ahead!

WAIT UNTIL 8th

Hi! Have you signed it yet? Just a reminder from your friends at KSPTA about Wait Until 8th Pledge!

What it IS:
The Wait Until 8th pledge empowers parents to rally together to delay giving children a smartphone until at least 8th grade. By banding together, we can decrease the pressure felt by kids and parents alike over smartphones. Surrounding Bay Area schools Ross, Corte Madera, Larkspur and the Reed District have also signed on.

What it IS NOT:
It is not a promise to avoid all screen time or even to wait until 8th to give your child a phone. The Wait Until 8th pledge is simply encouraging parents to delay the smartphone — you can still have the peace of mind of easy communication with an “old school” phone or watch.

Why is it IMPORTANT?
These devices are quickly changing childhood for children. Playing outdoors, spending time with friends, reading books, and hanging out with family are happening a lot less to make room for hours on snap chat, tik tok, Instagram, or streaming on YouTube. Experts say that smartphones are addictive, interfere with sleep and relationships, and increase the risk that children will suffer from depression, anxiety, and cyberbullying. Our kids deserve a childhood free of distraction.
