KSD News
Dear KSD Community,
As we enter the final two weeks of the 2022-2023 school year, we have much to celebrate and look forward to. From promotions to graduations, there is a special excitement among our students, staff, and parent community that we cannot ignore. The curiosity among our students to wonder about that next grade level – that next school setting is palpable. I urge you to embrace the wonder of our youth and relish in the joy of all that our community has accomplished this school year.
Wishing our community a fantastic end of the school year!
Sincerely,
Raquel Rose

Congratulations Bike Hero!
Congratulations to 8th grader, Aurora DeVilbiss! She was one of four students in the county to receive this year’s BIKE HERO AWARD for being an exceptional “ROLL” model, inspiring others to ride while obeying all the rules of the road. Safe Routes will be giving her a Bike Hero Award certificate and a $50.00 gift card to a local store.
Here’s what Aurora’s neighbor said about her:
I am Aurora’s neighbor and I frequently see her biking to school much earlier than many students, showing me that she has an early program to get to. As an 8th grader, Aurora is one of the older riders and sets a very good example for the many younger riders taking the same route. She is always in a helmet and focused on her surroundings, which is essential for navigating 2 very busy intersections along her route, including Wolfe Grade. She also slows and stops when conditions require it, like on narrow and congested side streets. I wonder if Aurora will continue to bike to school when she is in high school?

Attention 3rd-8th Grade Parents/Guardians
On May 30, the California Department of Education (CDE) announced an updated timeline for the release of Student Score Reports (SSRs) for the 2023 CAASPP assessment administration. On June 1, the CDE began releasing SSRs to public school districts for whom the reports were available. As of today, June 5, KSD has confirmed that CAASPP results for most 5th-8th grade students have been populated in the Aeries Parent Portal. Although 3rd-4th grade results have not yet been populated yet we anticipate those SSRs to be forthcoming.

COVID Update
The latest COVID-19 subvariant, XXB.1.16, is increasing in the U.S. according to estimates from the CDC. It has been most documented in India but has been found in 29 countries, according to the WHO. This new subvariant is producing a new symptom: conjunctivitis (pink eye), especially in children.
MCPH is recommending COVID-19 testing for students who present with pink eye. Guidance will be updated to reflect this change.
California Department of Public Health encourages all students and staff to test for COVID-19 IF they feel sick, AFTER exposure, travel, or large gatherings, and BEFORE events or visiting high-risk people.
Please know that our school offices have COVID tests available if needed. Thank you for your support.
Please reference this exposure notice for symptoms, communicability, and prevention information. (English I Spanish).
Please keep your child home if they are sick. Please contact our school nurse Laurel Yrun (lyrun@kentfieldschools.org), with any questions about navigating illness and school this year.
Bacich Bears News
Dear Bacich Families,
This is one time of year when big classroom projects are wrapped up and special student work is sent home. Some classroom projects are not represented by artifacts that can be sent home. This past Friday, a group of third-grade students hosted a Lemonade Stand during the third and fourth-grade lunch recess. This was the culmination of a math extension project during WIN (What I Need) time.
As you may remember from previous newsletters and Principal Chats, WIN is a 30-minute block of time where students are grouped together based on their academic needs. For some students, this means reviewing or reteaching concepts that have not yet been mastered. For others, it can be a time to go deeper into concepts that have been taught or to apply concepts to real-life situations as an extension activity.
All third graders have been a member of one of 7 WIN groups for the past several weeks. Some groups worked on math, while others worked on reading or writing. Each group is led by a third-grade teacher or paraprofessional. These small-group differentiated learning experiences provide students with learning activities that are tailored to their specific needs.
The Lemonade Stand came out of a WIN group that was working on a Project Based Learning opportunity to apply their knowledge of math concepts to a real-world situation. The students in this group came together from different homeroom classes to work together four times a week with Mrs. Maioriello. The idea for the Lemonade Stand came from the students. They designated a charity, Make-A-Wish Foundation, to donate the profits from the sales. The stand was a huge success, with a long line of students patiently waiting to purchase a cup of lemonade! Thank you to Mrs. Maioriello and the entire third grade team for making this possible for our students.
With gratitude,
Maria Martin

Kent Falcons News
Dear Kent Middle School Families,
Kent students in each grade level are working to end the year strong, and starting to anticipate what lies ahead for next year. This Wednesday during advisory a sampling of 6th-grade students will visit 5th-grade classes to advise our current 5th-graders how to prepare for next year. Also on Wednesday, we welcome current Bacich 4th graders to tour our school during our annual 4th to 5th grade Step Up Day. And we know our 8th graders are looking forward to June 16 at 2:30 p.m. when we give them their official send-off to high school at their 8th Grade Graduation! This is a time of change and growth for each of us as we welcome the conclusion of another school year, and anticipate what the next year will bring!
Enrichment Update – Our Kent enrichment program supports students at each grade level to explore a variety of interests, to build skills in new and creative ways, to collaborate with others and practice teamwork, and to find joy in a non-academic pursuit at school. I’m excited to share the enrichment courses that students will have the opportunity to experience at Kent next year. Each grade level will experience a rotation of enrichment classes, where all students get to participate in each enrichment class for approximately 6 weeks per cycle.
- 5th Grade Enrichments: Woodshop, Makers, Art 1, Art 2, Keyboarding, and Introduction to Independence
- 6th Grade Enrichments: Makers, Art, Book Clubs, Poetry, Life Skills
- 7th Grade Enrichments: Start Up, Art, Drama, Film Making, Service Innovation, Life Skills
- 8th Grade Enrichments: Manual Arts and Applied Technology, Art, Expressions, Screenwriting, Broadcast Journalism, Social Action
A full course offering of enrichment classes can be accessed through this link. You will note that 7th and 8th grade enrichments are structured as a rotation through all 6 classes next year, rather than a choice-based selection process as in previous years. We have noticed over the past few years that many students choose classes based on their peer group rather than specific interests, so allowing all students to take all classes will ensure balanced class groups and uniform exposure to innovative classes and creative spaces. We are looking forward to another year of creative and inspiring enrichments at Kent in 2023-2024!
Technology Return Plan – We are approaching the conclusion of our first year in the one-to-one device distribution model at Kent. By the end of this year, students and staff will need to prepare devices for use for the next school year. Below is a summary of our end-of-year technology collection plan to help students and families conclude the year.
- 5th Grade: Devices are housed in nest classrooms and will remain in nest classrooms. No action is needed by students and families.
- 6th Grade: Students and families will keep the devices you currently have and store them over the summer for use by the same student next year. In advisory, on June 14 students will fill out a Google form that will allow them to share any device repairs needed. Students will store their assigned device over the summer, and prepare to bring the device back to school with them next year as 7th graders. 6th grade families can expect to receive communication from our technology department prior to the end of the year with more information.
- 7th and 8th Grades: The devices used by our 7th and 8th graders will need to be returned before the end of the year and serviced at school. 7th and 8th grade students shall plan to return their Chromebook, Chromebook case, and charger to their advisory teacher during advisory on June 14. Students/families shall expect to receive an invoice to replace any missing device, case, or charger.
Thank you for your help to organize school-issued devices come the end of this school year!
Let’s have an awesome second-to-last week ahead!

Kent Principal

Summer Reading List
Don’t forget to check out our summer reading lists for each grade level! The purpose of summer reading is to promote student choice, extend learning beyond the classroom, introduce students to genres of literature that they will encounter throughout the coming school year, and offer new perspectives on the people, places, and ideas that shape students’ worlds and experiences. As a part of their summer reading, each returning student is required to read three books from their grade level list OR three books of their choice. I am looking forward to catching up on a few great books this summer, and I encourage our students to do the same!
