SchoolsRule Marin Distributes $220,000 to Every Public School Student in Marin
November 2012
On October 24, 2012, more than 150 school supporters gathered at a reception at the Marin Office of Education to celebrate the very first distribution of funds from SchoolsRule Marin to the foundations and school districts of Marin County.
SchoolsRule-Marin is a coalition of 20 public school foundations working in partnership with the Marin County Office of Education to benefit every public school student in Marin County. SchoolsRule’s objectives are to engage our community in a discussion about our schools and the important issues facing education, to encourage action through volunteering in the schools, and, in an unprecedented step in our community, to work together as one in raising funds for all students in all public schools in Marin County.
The total funds of $220,000 were divided among all Marin County school foundations and school districts based on Average Daily Attendance (ADA) figures. Two of Marin’s largest school districts, hardest hit by state budget cuts and serving Marin’s most economically diverse districts, received very significant funding. In the Novato Unified School District, the $50,768 presented to the School Fuel Foundation for Novato Schools will be used to restore a certified librarian position eliminated during previous budget reductions. In the San Rafael City schools, the $39,300 will help the district expand their K-8 music program by funding a section of middle school music and enhancing programs at every elementary site with instruments, instructional materials, and teacher development. kik (Kentfield School District) received $7,463.49 to be put towards technology maintenance.
At the reception, SchoolsRule Marin acknowledged the support of the Marin Community Foundation, Wells Fargo Bank, and more than 40 private contributors. The event was alive with the spirit of camaraderie and cooperation—the sense of what we can accomplish when we work together on a countywide basis for all kids in all public schools. Schools Rule Marin founding partners, the Marin Independent Journal, and Venables Bell and Partners were also honored for their incredible commitment and generous pro-bono work for SchoolsRule Marin.
At the gathering, SchoolsRule Marin announced that the next fundraising goal is $1 million. David Gilmour of Paradise Foods was present to kick-off that effort with his generous commitment of $100,000.
