KSD Highlights

Dear KSD Community,

I hope you are staying cool and hydrated through this heat wave. We are continuing to monitor classrooms and supporting students and staff as needed to ensure they have the most effective learning environments while we move through this heat wave.

Beginning September 7th our TK through 5th grade teachers will host in-take conferences to connect with their students’ parents/guardians. These conferences are brief but powerful ways to ensure our staff are equipped with key information about your children to help them thrive and maximize their potential this school year! Thank you for taking the time to participate in this meeting to get your child off to a great new school year.

Take good care,

KSD School Lunch Program | Bacich and Kent

Beginning this school year, the California Universal Meals Program (Education Code 49501.5), also referred to as School Meals for All, requires public school districts serving students in grades TK through grade 12 to provide two meals free of charge (breakfast and lunch) during each school day to any student that requests a meal. The program is a great step toward ensuring that all California students are receiving adequate nutrition and are therefore in a position to reach their full potential academically, socially and emotionally.

In the past, KSPTA has managed the KSD Lunch program by contracting with a food service provider, and providing parents with the opportunity to purchase lunch from that provider. This year, the KSD has contracted directly with our vendor, Dee’s Organics, and as before, any student can opt to receive a lunch at lunchtime. However this year, due to the new School Meals for All program, we have added breakfast to our meal offerings, and our district will provide a free breakfast or lunch to any student that requests one. Any meals that are provided to a student at no cost will be paid for by the district, and will not be reimbursed by the state or federal government as the KSD has opted to not participate in the federal National School Lunch Program (NSLP).

KSD has not participated, this year or any past year, in the NSLP. The number of families in our district who qualify for the program is small, and there are a number of benefits to opting out. By opting out of this program, we are free as a district to choose a provider like Dee’s Organics, which is outside of those allowed by the NSLP. In addition, the district is not required to bear the significant administrative burden of the NSLP program.

Because we are not part of the NSLP program, any additional free lunches that are provided to students under the new School Meals for All program will also be paid for by the district and are not reimbursed by the state. If the district receives voluntary donations then the cost of providing lunch to students outside of the NSLP program may remain affordable for our district.

KSD Board/District Committees

Another way to engage with District Operations is to join one or more of our KSD Board Committees. Committees typically meet four times a year and offer advice on issues ranging from communications, equity and inclusion, safety, finance, and technology. See the chart below for more information regarding each of these committees.

E-Bike Safety

E-bikes are rapidly increasing in popularity, especially with teens as they provide increased independence. E-bikes allow students to travel further and faster, allowing steep hills to be easily summited. Heavy school books and sports equipment are now easy to transport! One less vehicle on the road benefits all.

Yet, are students experienced enough to manage the increased speeds and challenging maneuverability of a heavy ebike? Parents are advised to do their own research and assess their children’s cycling abilities before purchasing one.

Please read this flyer to learn recommendations to help you make an informed decision about purchasing an e-bike or e-scooter for your student.

The Marin County Public Health continues to enforce the Marin County SMARTER Schools Plan for the 2022-2023 school year, this is the same plan that was implemented at the conclusion of the 2021-2022 school year.

Marin County Public Health is urging COVID testing for symptomatic individuals, exposure and/or high risk activity. Here is guidance from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) specifying situations in which to test. Families are urged to have test kits in the home, which can be obtained from the school offices during regular school hours or at local pharmacies.

If you test positive please report to Laurel Yrun at lyrun@kentfieldschools.org, no need to report negative test results. The KSD will continue to reference Marin County’s Public Health’s Isolation, Quarantine, and Travel Guidance for TK-12 Schools to address COVID exposure.
