December 5, 2019

Next week’s School Board meeting has interest for school community members interested in the district budget, 2018-2019 CAASPP results, our science program at Kent, and the new strategic plan.

The budget report known as the “first interim” report will provide an update on activity in the budget between its adoption in June and the end of October. The story this report tells will get us started on prioritizing expenditure reductions that will result in a balanced budget next year. The community is invited to a meeting on December 16 at the district office devoted exclusively to the budget work that will be done in January.

A written version of the strategic plan that has been drafted by members of the committee will be shared with the Board and meeting attendees, including several who participated in the two-day planning session in October. Priority areas, core values, and potential action steps have been gleaned from the plethora of ideas that were generated by a group of 40 district stakeholders. The Board will assess progress thus far and discuss next steps.

The 2018-2019 CAASPP results will be presented, with particular emphasis placed on the progress of student groups who have been the focus of recent LCAP goals: students with disabilities, English Learners, and socioeconomically disadvantaged students. Gender differences are also explored. The results are organized in cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses.

Of great interest will be the Kent Science presentation. The Science teachers at Kent were at the forefront of converting to the Next Generation Science Standards, and their recent adoption of new curriculum represents a significant milestone in the journey. We will learn more on Tuesday.

I hope you will be able to join us.
