For two days in August, all teachers in the Kentfield Schools, as well as several staff members, participated in Beyond Diversity, the foundational seminar developed by the Pacific Educational Group to facilitate the critical and courageous conversation about race that must happen in our schools and society.

The primacy of race as a determining factor in how a student does in school – academically, socially, emotionally, physically – is established. Poor white children do better in school that rich children of color. What is elusive is how to uncover and undo the personal and institutional biases that sustain these disparities.

Our work as a staff was a step forward on our journey toward being an equitable district, but it is only one step. It got us to a common vocabulary. We will deepen the conversation among ourselves as the year progresses and support each other in this arduous work because we know it is the right thing to do for our students.

The PTA’s partnership in our equity journey is now well established, and I am so excited to extend their invitation to a free evening with Courageous Conversation About Race on October 2nd in the Kent Library from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Translation will be available.  Come learn more about the impact of race on your own life, and become a participant in this movement in the Kentfield School District. The following day, October 3rd, there is an all-day Beyond Diversity Introductory Overview for the community at the Marin County Office of Education. This event has a fee.
