Kent Falcons News

Kent Principal Grant Althouse

Dear Kent Middle School Families,

Over the past two weeks, two of our Kent Falcon 8th graders have been featured on KQED public radio, sharing perspective pieces composed as a part of our 8th grade expressions class at Kent.

On February 16, Ami Bailey shared I Paint Myself Brown, a moving composition about identity and growing up in a mixed race family.

On February 24, Abe Marshall shared It’s Not Just Water, a revealing description of his journey with hearing loss and the social impact of wearing a hearing aid.

Ami and Abe drafted and refined these compositions as a part of their 8th grade Expressions class at Kent, a required enrichment course for 8th graders where students learn to write poetry, personal reflections, and short stories. The class focuses on personal reflection and capturing ideas and commentary through writing, as well as the expression and performance of finalized compositions. I encourage you to listen to Ami and Abe read their writing through the links above, as their confident voices bring even more life to their thoughtful words.

Congratulations to Ami and Abe for this public acknowledgment of their hard work! Thank you to teacher Myra Anderson for supporting all of our 8th grade students in their writing and reflection through our expressions class. I’m thrilled to be able to offer our students this important course in 8th grade, where they can apply all of that they’ve learned in their language arts classes to capture and express their ideas for the world to hear.

I’m looking forward to the week ahead with our Kent Falcons!

Kent Library Refresh Construction Project

Thanks to Kentfield Invests in Kids (KIK), we are starting a Library Refresh Construction Project to improve and enhance the Kent Library.

In order to support the completion of this project, the Library will be closed until March 5, opening again for student use the week of March 6. With a new look and a new feel, our Library will likely need a new name! We look forward to working with our students in the months of March and April to re-brand our new and improved Library space with a new name and fitting logo.

Save the date to view the library upgrades at our Open House on March 30!

We are pleased to announce that Kent will field a golf team for the highly competitive Marin County Middle School Golf League. This is our only sport open to all students in 5th - 8th grades and both boys and girls are eligible to try out. The golf team is also our smallest team since the Marin golf league only allows for eight players per school for the entire year. The golf program is designed to help prepare students who have an interest in pursuing competitive golf in high school and beyond. Our 2022 team posted scores from 35 to to 45 for all matches played and the team took second out of the 12 schools in the league - WAY TO GO FALCONS!!!
To help manage expectations the following criteria must be met to try out for the team.
Students must:

  • Own their own clubs
  • Have completed level 3 (200 yards or more) or better for an opp 36 program or participated in annual Nike Golf Camps at Peacock Gap or elsewhere
  • Have posted a 45 or under at McGinnis
  • Formally sign up prior to the day of tryouts

Additional information:

  • All matches will be played on Mondays with the first match being played on March 13 and the individual championship taking place in mid-late May
  • Practices will be mandatory for all players and will be held Wednesday afternoons at McGuinnis
