Kent Falcons News
Dear Kent Middle School Families,
Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast – This Friday, May 26 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. we invite all parents and guardians who have served our school in any volunteer capacity this year to join us for a special event in your honor. The Kent Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast will feature warm beverages, delicious morning fare, and good company as we appreciate the innumerable contributions of our Kent volunteer team. If you are one of the many people who contributed your time to support our school this year, whether serving on a committee, planning an event, being present at a school event, and/or working with our KSPTA and/or KIK, please join us at the Volunteer Breakfast this Friday in the Kent Middle School Lunch Plaza. We love our Kent volunteers!
Kent School Site Council, Parent Member Election – This week we vote for parent representatives to serve on the Kent Middle School Site Council, to fill three open terms. The Kent School Site Council is a planning and decision-making body made up of Kent staff, parents, and students. During our monthly meetings, we discuss current events at our school, as well as big-picture goals and initiatives that impact our community. It is an engaged group of stakeholders that encourage positive change through their questioning, discussion, and collaboration. This evening you will receive an email message from <noreply@electionrunner.com> with a link to a ballot to cast your vote for three new Site Council representatives. The parents interested in serving on our Site Council are Beth Karlsson, Julie Kidd, Katie Malabed, and Larry Moscato, and each included candidate statements as a part of the election communication you will receive this evening. The election will be open until this Thursday, May 25 at 5 p.m. We will announce the new members of the Kent Middle School Site Council as a part of next week’s district newsletter. Thank you so much for taking the time to vote for two new Site Council members!
Maximizing the Final Four Weeks – While walking through classrooms last week, I encountered engaged students participating in meaningful conversation and activities around daily learning objectives. In 7th grade English, students debated and discussed book club readings with their peers, analyzing notebook entries, and discussing similarities and differences between texts. 8th grade mathematics included a lesson on the Pythagorean theorem, and the application of the theorem to determine unknown lengths and distances. In 7th and 8th grade PE class students were perfecting their archery skills, while 5th and 6th graders performed tumbling routines. In 5th grade, students learned about puberty, and important changes ahead for their minds and bodies. While only four weeks of school remain in the 2022-2023 school year, these are opportune times for maximum student learning and growth. Let’s make the most of these final days together, Falcons!
Let’s have an awesome week ahead!

At some point your family has likely engaged in the conversation that we all have with our middle school children: When is the appropriate time to introduce a cell phone into your middle schooler’s life? This decision alone may have the most significant impact on the remainder of your student’s childhood, more than perhaps any other change we introduce in the middle school years.
Each family must carefully consider when it is right to introduce a smartphone into their child’s life. Simply put, children must have developed the appropriate maturity to be able to safely navigate the circumstances they will encounter through the use of a smartphone. Many Bacich and Kent families have taken the Wait Until 8th pledge as a way of showing their commitment to withhold access to a personal smartphone until their children are in 8th grade. This approach significantly reduces exposure to harmful content, delays the distractions and addictions that come with smartphone use, and prolongs childhood just a little bit longer.
