Kent Falcons News
Dear Kent Middle School Families,
June is on the horizon, and the conclusion of the 2022-2023 school year is only three short weeks away! Many celebrations, acknowledgments, and reflections are ahead as we finish this year of learning together.
Kent Principal’s Coffee – Please plan to join us for the final Principal’s Coffee of the year this Friday, June 2 from 8:45 to 10 a.m. in the Kent Library. During this Friday’s presentation, we will discuss transitions between grade levels, what to expect in your child’s grade level next year, and how students can set themselves up for success come the fall. Presenters this Friday will include 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Level Coordinators Lisa Bridges, Julie Gallagher, and Myra Anderson, as well as counselor Diana Bokaie, assistant principal Wendy Holmes, and me. We look forward to providing insights into the next grade level for your child! Please plan to join us for a warm cup of coffee and a productive conversation as we prepare for the next school year.
Upcoming Music Concerts – Our Kent Middle School musicians prepare to conclude their school year by performing a series of spring concerts for their peers and their families. The concerts begin this Wednesday, May 31 with the annual school Pops concert. During this school day performance, a variety of band, string, and choral ensembles will perform for their classmates, as well as crowd favorites like the 2023 Karaoke competition winners and the Kent rock band. The evening concert series kicks off next week on Monday, June 5 with the Spring Chorus concert, featuring a variety of choral numbers and creative ensembles. Next Tuesday, the 5th-grade band and string ensembles perform, while on Wednesday evening the 6th-grade band and string groups take the stage. The zero-period band and string ensembles conclude the series next week with a performance on Thursday evening. Please plan to join us for one or all of our spring concerts to see just how much progress our students have made with their musicianship and performance!
Summer Reading List – Summer break can present a welcomed refuge from the academic rigors of the school year, yet it is important to maintain some healthy literacy and numeracy habits even when outside of school. To assist with book selection for our falcons over the summer, school librarian Rebecca Jelen has compiled extensive summer reading lists for each grade level. The purpose of summer reading is to promote student choice, extend learning beyond the classroom, introduce students to genres of literature that they will encounter throughout the coming school year, and offer new perspectives on the people, places, and ideas that shape students’ worlds and experiences. As a part of their summer reading, each returning student is required to read three books from their grade level list OR three books of their choice. Maintaining daily reading habits over the summer helps to ensure that students continue to build reading strategies and skills that will lead to success with the next grade level’s curriculum.
School Site Council, New Membership for 2023-2024 – Thank you to all community members who voted to fill our open Kent School Site Council parent representative positions, and thank you to the parents who have expressed an interest to volunteer their time in this capacity. We are pleased to share that parents Beth Karlsson, Julie Kidd, and Larry Moscato will be serving on our Kent School Site Council starting in the 2023/24 school year. We look forward to working with you Beth, Julie, and Larry!
Let’s have an awesome week ahead!
